My very first day teaching at Farmington View Elementary — a day I’ll never forget.”
About Me
Hi, I’m Michael Blomenkamp, a licensed music teacher, band director, and multi-instrumentalist based in Hillsboro and Beaverton, Oregon.
Music has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. I studied euphonium and brass at the University of Oregon, where I earned my music degree, and later completed my teaching credentials through George Fox University’s MAT program. Through this process, I obtained an Oregon Teaching License, which I’ve now held for nearly six years — meaning I meet the same professional standards as the classroom teachers your child sees every day.
I began my career as the music teacher at Farmington View Elementary, where I taught general music and directed the school’s band program. After that, I joined the German International School (GIS) as one of the founding members of the middle school program, where I built the band program from the ground up. Over the years, I’ve directed ensembles, designed curriculum, and taught students across guitar, ukulele, brass, and woodwinds.
While I’ve worked with every age — from preschool beginners through high school musicians, and even a handful of adults — I have a special passion for guitar. It’s been my personal instrument for many years, and I love helping students discover its versatility, from their first chords to learning songs they can proudly perform.
Alongside teaching, I’ve performed in marching bands, jazz ensembles, rock groups, and pit orchestras — experiences I bring into my lessons to keep learning fun, creative, and connected to real-world music.
Whether you’re picking up the guitar for the first time, starting trumpet in middle school band, or rediscovering your love for music as an adult, my lessons are built around patience, encouragement, and personal growth. Every student learns differently, and my goal is to help each one find joy in their instrument while developing solid fundamentals.
Outside of teaching, I enjoy playing guitar in pit orchestras, working on original music projects, and spending time with my wife, Kelley, and our dog, Daisy.
Let’s make music together!
